Better control of the oxygen (O2) content of biomethane to promote growth in the sector

19 July 2024
Infrastructure operators publish a practical guide for biomethane producers to help them control the oxygen content of injected biomethane.

To encourage the development of the sector, network operators have implemented a derogatory system to accept an higher O2 content than the one accepted for natural gas, despite the fact that some European consumers and operators are sensitive to this component, since the addition of dioxygen is a cost-effective way of desulfurizing biogas.

Now that the biomethane sector has become more industrialized, and in view of the expected development trajectories, it has become essential to control this O2 content of injected gas.

This educational guide describes the origins and formation of H2S, outlines the various desulfurization stages and gives recommendations for using O2 wisely in the biomethane production process.
