In connection with the National Biogas Discussion Group organised today by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the Renewable Energies Union is launching MéthaFrance, the national public information portal dedicated to anaerobic digestion, in collaboration with a consortium of representative sector stakeholders.

Renewable energy from anaerobic digestion is seeing rapid growth in France. While the sector is still relatively unknown to the general public, it will play a crucial role in the country’s carbon neutrality. So it is vital that clear, objective information on the topic is made available to everyone. As such, the recommendations of the ministerial working group on anaerobic digestion included the "creation of a national resource portal, supported by professional organisations, to inform the public about anaerobic digestion and in particular its effects on the regions and the agricultural sector (circular economy, waste recovery, health, job creation, etc.)".

Today, the MéthaFrance site is rising to this challenge by collating information and answers to the main questions French people may have about anaerobic digestion, in an accessible format. This new online resource centre also provides information to local authorities and project owners seeking to become stakeholders in the development of renewable gas in France. Bringing existing resources together within a single national interface gives stakeholders an understanding both of the positive aspects and the watchpoints involved in developing anaerobic digestion. In this sense, MéthaFrance aims to support and inform discussions about the sector.

What is anaerobic digestion? How does it work? What is its history? What are its agronomic, environmental, socio-economic and energy impacts? How is it developing in France? Which stakeholders and professions make up the sector? These are all questions that MéthaFrance must answer in a simple, neutral, ergonomic and free-of-charge manner. The aim is to create a shared reference base by placing all existing knowledge and bibliographic resources under the same umbrella. The portal is an evolving space that will continue to grow in line with current events and publications.

As part of a mandate entrusted by the public authorities, the content of this national portal has been developed collectively by a steering committee involving many contributors.
