Launch of a Call for Expressions of Interest for the pyrogasification for injection sector
Within the framework of the work being done by the Strategic Committee for the “New Energy Systems Sector”1, GRTgaz is leading the Call for Expressions of interest relating to “pyrogasification for injection” This sector focuses on solutions involving solid waste that is unused or ineffectively used, converting it into renewable, low-carbon gas that can be injected into the gas networks. Purposes of this CEI: identify projects, consolidate and share a vision of the sector with the public authorities and various stakeholders.
The pyrogasification for injection sector is a promising sector, fully in line with the energy transition. The Strategic Committee on “New Energy Systems” has therefore decided to launch a Call for Expressions of Interest, that falls under the French State's policy of implementing experimental contracts for biogas production facilities that use innovative technologies. GRTgaz will support project developers with their proposals throughout the initiative. Participants will receive support and advice, in particular about network access and financing.
According to GRTgaz, using this technology to produce 90 TWh of renewable, low-carbon gas by 2050 is realistic and achievable.
The Call for Expressions of Interest was launched at a conference on 28 February and is open to all project developers for two months until 29 April 2022 – whether their projects are in the preliminary study phase or in the developmental phase.
Bertrand Simon, Head of Energy Transition Projects at GRTgaz said: “This Call for Expressions of Interest demonstrates the key role that GRTgaz is playing in the pyrogasification for injection sector. It is supporting local authorities and project developers, developing and sharing its own expertise, helping to create a framework within which the sector can emerge, and adapting its networks so they can transport new carbon-free gas”.
The pyrogasification for injection sector in France
The pyrogasification for injection sector is now technologically mature enough for work to begin on building the first industrial facilities in France starting in 2023. More than ten commercial projects and gas production demonstrators have already been publicly unveiled in France. Various stakeholders are spearheading these projects, including local authorities, waste treatment companies, industrialists and equipment manufacturers.
