The year’s first Call for Projects was launched on 18 January. GRTgaz and its partners are hoping for lots of applications for the opening of this seventh edition of the Open Innovation Factory. Themes, issues, schedules: find out about GRTgaz’s new challenge in collaboration with GRDF, Storengy France and Téréga.

The task: to reduce the O2 content in the gas chain

As part of gas greening goals and the energy transition, several gas operators are taking steps to promote the injection of biomethane into the transmission and distribution networks. Biomethane has a higher O2 content than natural gas. To meet the target volumes for injected biomethane, we now have to identify and/or develop technical solutions to control the O2 content in the gas chain. This is the challenge facing the applicants.

A Call for Projects like no other

The main new feature of this new 2022 edition is the staging of a multi-stakeholder Call for Projects. For the first time, GRTgaz has joined forces with three gas sector counterparts: GRDF, Storengy France and Teréga. Working together, the partnership aims to identify innovative operational responses to a sector-wide concern.

Gas operators’ challenges and expectations

The purpose of this Call for Projects is to remove any potential obstacles to developing biomethane and to facilitate the implementation of cost-effective, efficient solutions for handling O2. These solutions could be used at different levels of the gas chain, taking account of the location’s operational conditions. The way O2 is handled should allow operators to get close to the target content of 100 ppm, and also to ensure the safety of GRTgaz customers sensitive to O2.

GRTgaz, GRDF, Storengy France and Teréga will select one or more winners. Depending on the proposed projects, these will carry out feasibility studies, developments, and even experiments on the ground for solutions which, if they work well, could be implemented from 2024.

Schedule

Participants have until 15 April 2022 to submit their applications. Selected companies will be invited to present their bid to GRTgaz management on 28 June 2022. Winners will be announced on 8 July 2022.
